The tinsel and ornaments have been packed away and I have a fistful of resolutions to addresss, one which will be to post here at least once a week!
I’m flying into the new year with my creative juices flowing. I have a vampire book making the rounds, I’m working on a new big romantic suspense that has me excited and I even have a womens fiction book rolling around in the back of my mind.
Here’s the rub…I think we’re on the backend of the vampire craze. I’ve been told by dozens of sources the romantic suspense market is soft and womens fiction books have been dead in the water for a number of years. It’s enough to make a grown woman cry!
Fortunately, I’m an optimist and even though I listen and read to learn about market trends and what’s hot and what’s not, I still have the belief that a good book will find a home no matter what the genre. Delusional much? Probably, but what’s a writer to do other than write the stories that speak to them, focus on the book and not the business and hope that the stars align for something magical.
It’s easy to listen to the publishing news and get discouraged. The news for the past year or so hasn’t been great. Bookstores closing, mid-list authors being let go, downsizing and distribution issues abound. But, I believe in possibilities and so as a writer, I intend to write and hope.
I hope everyone can careen into this new year with hope in their hearts and the energy to get books finished.
